Galle was in the spotlight of this island many centuries before the colonial rulers came in to Ceylon. Arabs, Persians, Greeks and Roman merchants, adventurers attracted to this delightful port of Galle. Portuguese anchored in the fort of Galle in 1505 since then the modern history of Ceylon extended and continued for many a centuries attaching this island to the shrinking world. Portuguese dominance in the land for 135 years then the Dutch who then went on to build a remarkable landmark, the Galle Fort.

In 1796, British took over and made the Galle fort their headquarters.

Today Galle fort is a UNESCO world heritage site andattracted among many tourists. Galle is not just a pretty place, it is a city of trade and art. You will find Galle Fort crowded with little boutique shops with antique jewelry, collectibles, hand woven garments and so on. It is a haven for photographers, popular foreign artists, writers, poets and designers who like old cities.

Hikkaduwa

The beach is wide and long with soft golden sand. This stunning beach is naturally ideal for sunbathing all day long. It is about a half an hour drive by the coast to the historic city of Galle. Hikkaduwa more popular for the sun, sea and sand.

Beach walks, soothing sea breeze, delicious sea lobsters and pool side cocktails while watching the beautiful sunset are precious luxuries that will refresh your body, mind and soul.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna located not far away from the world famous UNESCO world heritage city of  Galle.  The bay with crystal clear water with low current makes it a perfect spot for snorkelers. Unwatuna’s coastal is gathered with beach side restaurants and cafe’s.

One of the popular excursions is the Rumassala Temple located in the Rumassala island. It has a significant recognition in the Indian legendary myth of ‘Ramayana’. You also can walk in to the famous man maid  ‘jungle beach’ in Unawatuna.
