Buduruwagala

Standing at 50 ft, the tallest standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka is slashed out of a single piece of rock at Buduruwagala Temple, just off the road between Beragala and Welawaya in the south eastern hills.

Along with the tallest Buddha stature, the complex consists of six smaller type statues, with three to each side of the main statue.

Among the figures carved into the rock face is thought to be the Bodhisattava Avalokitesvara, which is Buddhist mythological figure of bodhisattva. And alsothe female figure in the thrice-bent posture, who is thought to be the Bodhisattava’s consort, Tara.The figures date back to between the 7th and 10th centuries, but no comprehensive historical details are known.
